The Expedite Plus Stakes went to Golden Returns this afternoon at Fort Erie Race Track. The five-year-old son of Prospector’s Gamble covered six furlongs in 1:10 1/5 seconds, two and a quarter lengths better than race favorite Tempered Appeal. Golden Returns is owned by Victor and Roseanne Deschenes, trained by Robert Martin, and was ridden to victory by Ray Sabourin. The total purse was $53,900, with the winner earning $32,340.“I had a perfect trip,” said Sabourin. “I knew Tempered Appeal was coming, but I also knew I had plenty of horse left.” Trainer Robert Martin was extremely proud of his horse following the big effort. “He’s a game horse. He always comes through for me!”
Jockeys and fans also had a vested interest in the outcome, thanks to Victor and Roseanne Deschenes, owners of Expedite Plus, a Mississauga based delivery company. A separate $15,000 purse was made available to the riders, with a $10,000 contest offered to six lucky fans, who were each assigned a horse in the Expedite Plus Stakes. With his share of the purse and the rider’s bonus, Sabourin earned over $12,000 for the victory.
